Public Option for Healthcare

Last week, the Senate passed two important bills that would improve access to quality, affordable healthcare in Washington. Senate Bill 5822 would create a work group to study how best to make universal healthcare a reality in Washington, and Senate Bill 5526 would create a state-subsidized public option to increase the availability of quality, affordable coverage for individuals who don’t receive health plans through their employers. I was happy to vote for these bills.

Holocaust Education

Recently the Senate also passed a bill I co-sponsored to emphasize Holocaust education in our schools. It’s important to learn from history to avoid repeat episodes of genocide. We know that in Nazi Germany a process of “otherization” facilitated the heinous acts of that regime. It’s imperative that we teach our students the lessons of the Holocaust so that students can recognize symptoms that lead to these political events and be prepared to stop them from ever happening.

I will continue working on these issues, and more, as a member of both the Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and the Law & Justice Committee, and as vice chair of both the Local Government and the Agriculture, Water, Natural Resources & Parks committees.

I want to hear what you feel is important and how our Legislature can do more to put people first. I encourage you to contact my office or visit Olympia.

Thank you,
