OLYMPIA – The 2017 legislative session begins on Jan. 9, where many important issues will be before the Legislature – including the Washington State Voting Rights Act. At a recent conference for state legislators, Rev. Dr. William Barber II gave a speech about the battle for voting rights in the U.S. now and in the past, and the critical role the federal Voting Rights Act played in overriding voter suppression efforts.
In a time of deep political division, Rev. Barber reminded lawmakers of the power of unity by saying, “Democracy depends on everyday people standing together in public and refusing to be divided by those who refuse to serve the common good.”
