The 2015 Legislative Session has begun!

January 16th, 2015|

Dear friends and neighbors,

During the last few years, I have focused my efforts on bills that have a direct, positive impact and increase opportunity for all in Pierce County and across our state. I have been working closely with key advocates, stakeholders, and you to make sure we are creating good policies that align with the mission statement I wrote as your state Senator.

I would like to share it with you as we wrap up the first busy week of the 2015 Legislative Session:

“I am dedicated to building equality and reducing poverty. I am focused on policy changes that address the issues of racial inequality and poverty in state programs, particularly in the overlap between the juvenile justice system, the foster care system, teen homelessness, and the way that the educational system fails these youth.

“I believe that the failure of our mental health system negatively impacts all sectors of our society: social services and housing, public safety and parks, jails and emergency rooms. Addressing the provision of mental health services might be the most important issue facing our state.

“I am committed to addressing the needs of families struggling to make ends meet by increasing education funding for all learners; expanding health care for children, families, and the disabled; developing a safe environment for children and adults to learn, grow, and thrive; safeguarding civil liberties; reducing violence against women and children; and promoting opportunities to create living-wage jobs.”

I am pleased to continue to serve as the ranking Democrat on the Human Services, Mental Health & Housing Committee, and to serve as a member of the Law & Justice, and Financial Institutions & Insurance committees.

In the coming weeks I’ll be providing you with more information on bills that I’m sponsoring. I am still in the writing stage for many of my 25 bills. Some have been dropped and have bill numbers and some are still being worked on. Please look for more information on my bills in next week’s newsletter.

Please continue to contact my office with your questions, comments and concerns. Lisa Fisch, my legislative assistant, is most likely well known to anyone who has contacted my office. Sal Rosario is my new session aide and Richard Castaneda from Browns Point is my office intern.
