Session Update – March 12

March 12th, 2012|

Welcome!

As I write this, we are just hours past a landmark piece of
civil rights legislation being signed into law.

Gov. Gregoire just made SB 6239 official, allowing gay and
lesbian couples to marry.

This was a long, tough battle to make all Washington
families truly equal. Now some of the toughest work
remains ahead.

The coming weeks will see the budget debate heat up.
With it will come proposals for new revenue and perhaps
even deeper cuts. Senators and representatives on both
sides of the aisle have strong beliefs in both approaches.

I believe that after three consecutive all-cuts budgets, our
state services are in desperate need for an injection of new
revenue.

I will fight for a budget that I believe is fair, just and
doesn’t ask those who can pay the least to surrender the
most.

Governor signs marriage equality bill
On Monday in front of a packed house, Gov. Gregoire signed Senate Bill 6239, which legalizes
same-sex marriage in our state.

The landmark legislation removes the final barrier to full marital rights for gay and lesbian couples
and will make Washington the seventh state in the nation, along with the District of Columbia, to
legalize marriage between same-sex couples.

Below is the link to a video I recorded regarding my own thoughts on this milestone bill:
